DNV Urges Companies to Adopt Food Value Chain Certification to Combat Food Loss and Waste

In recognition of the UN’s “International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste,” DNV emphasizes the role of certification in reducing food waste across the value chain. The UN reports a rise in hunger since 2014, with edible food lost or wasted daily. Globally, 13% of food is lost between harvest and retail, while 17% of total global food production is wasted in households, food service, and retail. This waste contributes to 38% of total energy usage in the global food system, impacts resources like water and land, and leads to greenhouse gas emissions. Certification standards such as GLOBALG.A.P. and ISO can help businesses identify and reduce food loss and waste, demonstrating their commitment to addressing this global challenge.
