Summertime on the Costa Blanca means a complete change of scenery: pool dips, beach days, barbecues, and balmy evening strolls. Hot weather and constant sun exposure can cause people to forget about staying hydrated, which is a major health risk.
Maintaining adequate hydration is not only a health tip, but also a necessity, regardless of whether you live here or are just visiting this Mediterranean paradise.
During hot weather, especially in sunny coastal areas like the Costa Blanca, your body loses water faster through sweating and evaporation. Dehydration can creep up quickly, leading to symptoms like fatigue and dizziness, headaches, dry mouth and skin, reduced concentration, muscle cramps, and sometimes, in more severe cases, heatstroke.
Even if you’re just lounging on a terrace with a cold drink, drinking enough water should be your top priority because temperatures frequently rise above 30 degrees from June to September.
Even though the “eight glasses a day” rule is only a general recommendation, you should increase your hydration through activities like walking, swimming, hiking, gardening, and physical activity. Also, if you’re consuming alcohol or caffeine, particularly if you’re doing so in the sun.
Consuming foods high in water also helps. Fortunately, there are plenty of refreshing summertime options at the Costa Blanca’s fresh produce markets, including watermelon, tomatoes, cucumbers, and strawberries. Hydration feels a little more refreshing when you add slices of cucumber, lemon, or mint to your water, especially on hot summer afternoons.
Dehydration is more common in children, the elderly, and pets, especially during summer heat waves. Make sure they drink frequently, and never leave anyone, including your pets, in hot cars or in the sun for extended periods of time.
In general, the Costa Blanca’s tap water is safe to consume. However, because of its taste or mineral content, a lot of locals favour bottled or filtered water. When in doubt, choose bottled water, particularly when travelling or in rural areas.
Remember to bring a bottle of water with you whether you’re lounging by your pool in Javea, hiking along the cliffs of Cabo Roig, or sipping sangria at a chiringuito. In addition to being comfortable, staying hydrated during the scorching Costa Blanca summer months is important for your health. Your body will appreciate it if you incorporate staying hydrated into your daily summer routine.
