Autumn in Spain: A Local’s Guide to the Best Time of Year

If you’re new to the Costa Blanca, you might believe the magic fades with the summer sun. But those of us who live here all year know the truth: autumn is arguably the best season of all. The scorching heat gives way to warm, gentle days, the crowds thin out, and the true character of our lovely region emerges.

This isn’t about big, flashy tourist attractions; it’s about the simple, everyday pleasures that make life in the autumn special.

Embrace the Outdoors (Without the Sweat!)

Remember those summer hiking plans you abandoned due to the heat? Grab your walking shoes now. The cooler temperatures make it ideal for exploring the natural beauty that surrounds us.

One of my favourite autumn rituals is a walk around Torrevieja and La Mata’s salt lakes. The fresh air and soft light enhance the lakes’ pink and green hues. It’s a relaxing little escape that also allows you to see the diverse birdlife that lives here. For a more difficult trek, head to the Sierra de Bernia. The views from the top, I’ve heard, are spectacular, especially with the clear autumn skies.

Food That Warms the Soul

Autumn in Spain is all about hearty and delicious cuisine. This is the time for mushrooms, peppers, chestnuts, and hearty stews. It’s time to ditch the beach bars and seek out traditional Spanish restaurants where the menu is written on a chalkboard and the paella is cooked over a wood fire – sounds delicious, doesn’t it?!

This is also the time for grape harvesting, or vendimia, in nearby valleys. A day trip to Vinalopo Valley to sample local wines and see vineyards in their prime is an experience not to be missed. While the summer months are filled with fiestas, autumn celebrations are often more authentic and centred on local traditions. Mark your calendars for October 9th, which is Valencian Community Day. It is a public holiday that honours a significant event in our history and the towns of the region. It’s time to celebrate with parades, music, and, of course, food! The official flag of the Valencian community can be found hanging from balconies all over the place, adding colour to our towns.

So, while the tourists are packing their bags and heading home, we locals are just getting settled in for the best part of the year. Grab your light jacket, go outside for some fresh air, and discover the quiet beauty and rich traditions that make autumn in the Costa Blanca so special!
